Aside from the USB-connected controller, the mouse-driven aspects of Studio One are excellent: Quickly delete a track by holding down the Shift key, move the cursor to the beginning of the next track, and press the Tab key. Also, the controller is much better than Apple’s. It has a multicolor backlit screen and media keys, and it feels like a single button, unlike the three different colored buttons on a standard Apple keyboard.

Studio One has a useful set of 32-sample presets. You can import your own, or you can create your own by selecting instrument, drive, stereo panning, and EQ. Studio One doesn’t offer much in the way of synthesizers or drum machines, but you can record drums, such as kick, snare, and hi-hats, and it has a wide assortment of percussion samples.

Your final album will sound much better in Pro Tools than it would in most other DAWs, and Pro Tools is clearly the best mix engine for that. But if you’ve got the budget, Studio One 5 is a much better, more versatile, and easier-to-use workhorse than Pro Tools. It’s not my first choice as a producer or engineer, but it’s great for mixing, and it’s free.

This is a bit of a mixed bag. The USB-connected controller is definitely a step up from the ones on Studio One 3 and 4, and it’s not as awkward as the one on the Cubase 7 USB driver. But there are only two USB inputs, and you can use the built-in USB-C port for computers, smartphones, and gadgets. It’s also much smaller than the controller for the new Pro Tools.

As a user of the previous version of Studio One, I’m glad to see the interface change. It seems less cluttered, and everything is intuitive, and the trim-on-the-fly audio editing is very good. The only problem is that it is a bit busy, and it can feel like it’s a bit complex. In particular, the Transport is the obvious weak link, so I’m glad the new one is so much better.

The new Add MIDI Host feature, on the flip side, allows you to add a second instance of your Studio One setup as a virtual host. Then, you can add as many tracks as you like, and your tracks, plugins, and preferences are shared between the hosts so you don’t need to redo things in each instance. Sweet!

Studio One has lost a few, I think, from its core features set, with more ideas than ever on the wishlist. Like in previous version, Studio One remains at its heart a standalone DAW for MIDI sequencing, and as with most cross-platform software, it’s lacking a true professional workspace. Although some users do indeed want to do production work, the plugin-based approach means that 99% of Studio One users rely on the same set of plug-ins for everything: MIDI editing, mixing, reverb, plugins. So, Pro Tools definitely has more plugins than Studio One, but they don’t exist in the same way so you have to jump through hoops to use them, be it in multiple windows, a computer, or multiple computers. Until Pro Tools is freed from its binding to Neve and other hardware and becomes an API-based cloud-based hosted platform, we’re still not going to see the features that professional users expect.

Indeed, Studio One makes it painless to create and automate audio, make basic changes, and perform basic effects. One can save presets for these functions, so with a single click, one can make a preset change, add a drum bus, add a gate to a track, or reduce or remove the dry/wet mix.

Some useful new features and enhancements include bounce, which enables you to insert a copy of a clip so it can bounce to an alternate track, which I highly recommend. The new midi track, Group, Timeline and Group are customizable, AppleScript-ready tracks that enable one to work dynamically with MIDI input or output. The Object Library now includes Parametric EQ, as does Artist. If you need visualizers, the new MIDI capabilities include aftertouch and volume, and the Effects section has more effects, including Finetune, which works great in MIDI with the new Equalise feature that lets you stretch and shorten notes with ease. Piano Roll, Mixer and Time View are also new to the Mac-only Studio One version 5.0.8.
