ESETs NOD32 Smart Security is a easy-to-use suite that includes protection for Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, Android, and, when you opt in, certain Android-powered devices. (Our more-advanced Editors’ Choice, ESET NOD32 Internet Security, adds even more features for PC and Android users.)

When we reviewed ESET NOD32 for Windows and Mac last year, we liked its battery-friendly energy-saving technology and its multi-platform nature. The mobile apps are easiest to use on Android devices, but we liked their appearance on iOS devices as well. ESETs Mac and Windows apps are less sleek.

The ESET NOD32 suite sets a 7,800+ price point for all of its features, but the browser extension is free. ESET NOD32 adds the same wallet-busting price as Norton 360 (which requires an Internet connection) for five VPNs and 50GB of cloud storage. If you’d rather download and install the app than use its browser extension, the suite costs $49.99.

New in the last year is auto-update support for iOS. ESET has previously only offered it for Android users. This iteration of NOD32 also, uh, updates automatically.

We also like ESETs unique ability to update the app automatically when a new version is available. If a new version is available before the current version is installed, an alert prompts you to install the newer version. Just tap Accept, and you will be protected when the new update is installed. Unfortunately, it doesnt tell you when new version is available; you simply find it in your App Store.

Our occasional quibble with ESETs NOD32 is that we wish it wasnt just for Windows and Mac computers. Also, the Android mobile version is labeled as NOD32 but does not function identically to the browser extension, so we recommend using the browser extension.

ESET’s Smart Security offers a lot of protection for a modest price. It’s up there with Norton, Kaspersky, and Bitdefender. The catch is that you need to be technically savvy in order to protect yourself. In fact, ESET says that the average user of antivirus software doesn’t need it. For starters, only seven options are available for protection (including two that cannot be configured in your Windows XP, Windows 7 or Windows 8 PC). If you have any problems or you want to move up to more advanced settings, you need to go to a third-party website.

Because ESET has fewer features, it has less of a learning curve. Still, the interface could have been tweaked for better performance. In the dialog box that lets you configure the program, you need to scroll down through a long list of options to find a checkbox for each. This is where you’ll find the blocklist options. As an example, I have 10 checkboxes for just two blocklist categories, and 26 updates are available.

ESET Smart Security is a mixed bag. The basic security measures are good — including the proactive protections of on-access scanning and the file-level scanning. It’s also got a reasonably powerful package of network-based detection that should keep users apprised of any problems. Overall, ESET is an impressive free offering that provides a good start.

While ESET has what is arguably the best free AV of any major vendor, it runs counter to the freemium model. In that, it has one of the very best free AV products for Windows, but its on-access scanning only goes back for 30 days. If an infected file is found, ESET can send you an email notification. As long as the email is configured, that happens in a day or two — not hours — at most.

This could cause a problem for ESET users who download software from, say, Amazon or Google, or who download files from their SkyDrive account. I got infected by a pop-up ad from Amazon that was reported to ESET, but it happened to be a couple of days before ESET notified me.

Before we go any further, ESET also offers a monthly subscription to ESET OneCare which gives you a security suite to rule them all. It’s a similar package to ESET SysInspector’s Scan-and-Save mode. OneCare has all the same powerful features, but aims to provide the same level of protection across your entire system, not just your browser. It also has an equivalent to ESET’s NOD32 Online ThreatFire

NOD32 is ESET’s flagship product, the point where the company says ‘we start thinking that our customers buy a security product, not a tool to learn about it.’ It combines a traditional desktop security package with a powerful online portal, and offers cloud-based protection. NOD32 started life as the company’s first web-based product, and is now bundled into it.

The company says NOD32 is based on ‘three pillars of security,’ which include the ability to scan your system, the NOD32 ThreatFire cloud-based portal, and the ESET SmartWeb web application firewall.

Scan-and-Save is the free-to-download package. It’s a surprisingly polished feature set that really complements ESET SysInspector well. Turn on protection, and click a button, ESET SysInspector will start scanning. Save the details, and you’re done for the day. Scan-and-Save hasn’t been updated for a while, and isn’t exactly an evolution of the existing product, rather it’s best thought of as a facelift.

ESET have been offering an anti-malware suite since 2005, and they have a loyal following for good reason. ESET knows what you’re doing on your computer, and it can be quite good at explaining why it has blocked or quarantined something.

ESET has detected new variants of a Mac rootkit recently and recalled 13m Macs for the same issue. They’re also good at admitting that they have problems when they mess up, and they’re part of the GFI TrustedSec antivirus alliance. They’re even good at rooting out online scams when people are part of the ESET-watching crowd.

NOD32 is ESET’s newer, simpler anti-virus suite, and it’s easily the best all-round solution out there. (Unless you’re getting premium / enterprise for the full suite, when Bitdefender and Symantec are stronger.) It doesn’t have quite the features of the full package, but for my needs – I have a SSD, use built-in Wi-Fi, and don’t use Steam – it’s perfect.

When I first checked out ESET a few years ago they had one of the best LiveCD boot disks I’d ever used. ESET was good at showing you their anti-malware features, and it had a quick-launch box (a la ZoneAlarm and Lookout) to walk you through the process.

ESET NOD32 Smart Security offers the most advanced anti-malware capabilities available. ESET NOD32 Antivirus Pro has a full-featured antivirus engine that provides comprehensive virus and malware protection, and an anti-rootkit engine that detects and removes malware and rootkits that hide from normal detection.

If your smartphone isn’t rocking ESETs mobile protection, then I suspect it may be a perfect fit for your Linux machine. Both ESET and G Data work with mobile Linux systems when your net connection isn’t secure. That makes them a good choice for public-access computers, and they didn’t try to use my Wi-Fi network while I was logged in to my office PCs. In these cases, ESET can also keep your data files safe from mobile malware that steals the contents of unprotected files. ESET can also lock your files out of a malicious Android app if youre using a phone running Android 6 or higher.

TrueCrypt is awesome, but using free software is optional. If youre going to use a free file encryption program, be sure to use one that isnt also your security solution. ESET doesnt disappoint here, either. TrueCrypt has a button to create a complex password, with optional rules to not let the same character appear again. The ESET GUI lets you create a Random Password, with the strength of 256 bits, or a Static Password, that matches whatever you enter.

The core offering in NOD32 is System Protection, which keeps malware from running and snares potentially dangerous applications. ESET can detect the signature of known malware and displays a detailed description, though you might want to add software to the white list.

Also included is sandbox technology that isolates programs and attachments from harmful activity. If youre having trouble cleaning up trojans or hijackers, for instance, Nod32 will scour your hard drives, setting aside all files that it doesnt recognize to be deleted later.

In addition to these efforts, ESET can remove problematic processes and reset settings, which makes the next rounds of scans that much more effective.

Network Protection

A company called MyDoom is making the rounds, and several ESET users have reported its IP-saturating malware. ESETs solution for the trojan, called SMART Security Wipe, locks down most of your devices and can be pulled to give you the space needed to delete the infection and restore your network settings.

Mass Email Scanning

ESETs automated email scanning solution, called NOD32 SmartMail, attempts to thwart email-borne threats. In addition to cleaning the outbound messages, ESET can find attachment links, update the status of messages as they come in, and reset any browser cache entries from the messages. It also gives you the option to open the messages in one of the blocking email apps.

Password Manager

ESETs cloud-based password manager is based on the SecurID framework and supports 15,000 users. You can create as many user accounts as you like and sync your stored passwords across devices. Youll also find a clear interface, plus one-touch password reset and backup features.

ESET NOD32 Smart Security is part of the ESET Smart Security family of programs and follows on from ESET NOD32 Security with the same active protection technology. But there are some key features that set it apart from ESET NOD32 Security. For starters, ESET NOD32 Smart Security free download offers domain and site lock with geo-blocking.

This effectively stops you from visiting harmful or illegal websites. And if you use third-party security tools, such as ESET URL Filtering and Advanced App Control, ESET can automatically block malicious apps. This is very useful because you can quickly visit a safe website and then reboot your phone to remove any malicious programs. ESET also protects you against cyberbullying and hacking. So, for example, if someone posts a link on your Facebook or Twitter account, ESET will check that for malicious content and stop you from visiting it.

Youll also get access to ESET’s one-click devices security and site lock features, which stop users from downloading and installing malicious programs on their devices.

ESET NOD32 Smart Security offers great protection and is well worth the price. There are also some potentially significant downsides, but they are mainly tied to the fact that it doesnt use Microsoft Windows. First, because ESET isnt based on Windows, it cant run all of the Windows programs youre used to.

This isnt a major issue because the main antivirus programs you already use, such as F-Secure, Kaspersky and AV-Test, all work well on Android. So ESET is a great option for Android users, provided youre not looking for a fully integrated Windows antivirus program. The other downside of ESET NOD32 Smart Security is that it does not offer any USB security or apps related software.

ESETs subscription service helps you keep on top of any spyware threats you discover in your system. The software will tell you when a new variant of a malicious software is detected. You can easily remove it, and ESETs expert will help you. If you arent comfortable with what you see, you can automatically remove the threat.

Back to the main review: ESETs NOD32 2013 is a new version of the well-regarded NOD32 antivirus and security suite. Compared with many of its predecessors, this newest edition offers a few nice new features, but ESETs upgrades are aimed at ensuring the security of your Windows system, not on bringing a nice new design.

NOD32s initial screens is simple. You need to choose a language, click on Start, and then click on Enter. Accept the defaults for the installation location, installation size, and setting up Internet Access.

On the left, you see Installed software, which lists only the ESET utilities youre currently using. In the home screen setup, it lists each system separately, including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Raspberry Pi, and more. Theres also a category for online services, which you can set up, in addition to sharing your settings.

Click on ESET to see its core set of features. Select NOD32 Security. Youll see six icons with names like Firewall, Email, Parental Control, Malware Protection, Setup, and more.
