ESET Smart Security is good for home users with PCs and mobile devices, and small to medium-sized businesses. If you have a Mac, it doesnt work with that either.

Even if youre an enterprise-class organization, we wouldnt recommend ESET. It doesnt receive the same testing as a popular antivirus, like McAfee or Norton, which is important for large corporations. Just as you want to be security-savvy in your personal life, you should be aware of the bad guys. With ESET Smart Security, youre targeting the bad guys who will be a tiny proportion of the total number of machines that ESET secures. Thats a small target with many low probabilities of being hit.

Software bugs are quite common, and antivirus vendors try to minimize the possibility of a criminal or malicious user turning their antivirus detector off. When you have a product that identifies malware and prevents it from spreading, such as ESET, that means you have a product that minimizes the threat of viruses and other malware. What youre really buying is the chance to spot a problem when you see it.

Firstly, let’s clear this up. ESET is not an antivirus tool. It’s a security suite, antivirus, and firewall, firewall and a few other bits and pieces. There’s a difference, and we’ll explain the important parts, but the most important thing is that you need the antivirus part. Antivirus can help you to block malware, a virus, but it doesn’t protect you from everything, or something, that could go wrong.

It will help you detect malware infecting your computer, making itself run all the time, hiding itself even, or getting in the way so that you can’t run other programs. Or sending you pop-ups and keylogging (or worse). ESET can also keep tabs on known bad sites and block them, or (depending on the ESET offering) keep tabs on websites that have known malware on them, and either prevent you from visiting them, block them, or log you out if you visit them. That’s what we like about ESET and the other suites — they can make you safer by keeping you away from the bad sites.

ESET will run in the background, quietly protecting you while you use your computer. But it won’t do this if you never run any apps, or use a secure browser. It won’t protect you from such attacks if you’re not using proper security configurations. And it won’t protect you from hostile attacks by malware.

When it comes to functions, NOD32 Android OTA is a no-brainer upgrade. It’s a relatively light security add-on to the base antivirus product, so there’s very little to lose, and all for a good price, of course. Plus, you get the iOS version free of charge (as is the case if you buy ESET’s base Android app), so there’s no reasons not to give it a try.

And it’s not just the promise of a new OS. If you’re already using an ESET product, you can upgrade your existing ESET product for free, using the remote subscription option. If you already have Internet Security, though, and have no plans to replace it, you can use the ESET NOD32 Premium app from the Google Play Store for free.

On the main page you see the word Security in large capital letters. Turn the mouse over that word and you see a gear icon. Click the gear icon to start the Security settings. ESET offers an excessive number of configuration options on the Security tab. Since many aren’t necessary for this review I decided to disable all but a few.

You’ll see a message asking you to reboot your PC. Rest assured, ESET will be restarting it in just a moment. You’ll continue to see the Security settings page every time you reboot. When you’re done, you have the option to change Advanced Settings.

By default, ESET NOD32 Secure Encryption chucks the drive in a totally arbitrary encryption folder. If you have an ESET edition that provides secure deletion, you can skip this step. If not, you need to designate the encryption folder. In my review of ESET MoneyPak edition, I told you about the vault storage method ESET uses to delete sensitive files. If you want to use the same approach, visit Settings to tell ESET where to store encrypted files. If you don’t want an encrypted folder at all, this is a good place to turn it off.

ESET NOD32 Security Settings explains which of the security features are enabled on the Security tab. It also tells you that a device driver is being blocked or restricted. I skip this step. You really only need to worry about drivers if you’re trying to get an older OS like XP to work on a newer machine. The settings are so weak that Microsoft can’t stand it anymore. Besides, you can always disable drivers manually.

NOD32s inner workings change frequently, so that version of ESETS features is outdated by the time you read this review. That is not the case, however, with ESETs Smart Security Premium and ESET NOD32 antivirus. Each product includes features that will be available in future versions.

A Smart Security Premium license includes a free Advanced System Health Scan that runs once every week. It takes a sample of the file data in your computer to look for hidden threats. Although ESET shows only a basic warning, it has made innovations in this space. Most antivirus software now includes a real-time scan, which can speed up boot-up. ESET has a real-time scan that can detect files that may be infections such as.dmg files and pspkg files. Just like Avast and BitDefender, ESET also has a boot-up scan that starts scanning the data it finds without shutting down. ESET also has a mini version of the Advanced System Health Scan that takes a snapshot of your system for a full database.

ESETs Web Shield uses your browser history to block websites that you have previously visited. You can specify websites that you dont want to visit, or for which you want to be warned that they are malicious (such as a phishing site). You can enable Web Shield from the Check For Updates section, or select it as one of the system-protection settings in the Security and Privacy settings.

ESET automatically updates when you run the antivirus software. This is a relatively new feature in the ESET line. ESET has been the first to do this. Every ESET product includes a free update for every other ESET product in its line. ESET Keyboard-initiated Update lets you add, remove, or update antivirus definitions on a schedule you define from the Check for Updates section.

ESET Internet Security also includes excellent malware protection, as well as a great firewall, Web reputation service and online backup. To be fair, ESET does offer a free antivirus component, but that’s free for 30 days, and then you’re on the hook for $49 per year, which comes to around $3 per month. ESET Internet Security works by scanning your system when you restart it and, then, by scanning it every 60 minutes. Those scans are fairly comprehensive and, if anything unusual pops up, ESET will notify you with a pop-up.

ESET Internet Security is a pretty good performer, but, as always, it could be better. There’s a problem with the program’s engine (which is exposed to all components via an API) that allows programs to modify scanning data. This isn’t a huge problem, but it can be exploited and, in particular, if ESET Internet Security is connected to your network, it is vulnerable to state-sponsored cyberattacks. For this reason, the default configuration (as found on many home networks) is to run on a system user account rather than the administrator account. Nevertheless, ESET Internet Security is still pretty good. Its performance is especially impressive when compared to other open-source security programs like ClamAV.

In spite of this, the suite is one of ESETs top performers, and it includes a good network security scanner. ESET Internet Security brings these capabilities down to the suite level. ESETs suite operates on the Windows platform only, but new ESET software for other platforms is promised in the near future.

ESETs NOD32 free Internet Security and ESET Smart Security Premium are both available as part of the suite, which includes ESETs NOD32 Network Security utility. In addition to antivirus and ant-theft protection, both products protect against phishing, targeted malware, and advanced ransomware such as NotPetya.

Since ESET wont tell you how good its suite products are, we have to look at ESETs independent security test results. ESET has updated its security suite for several years, so we can compare ESET Internet Security with the new ESET NOD32 Family 2016/2017. In its Annual v5, ESET NOD32 Family scored 13,324, a good result. Its flexible malware-scanning engine is capable of handling more types of malware than the majority of competing products. It scored less for phishing protection, with a total of 5,731, although it has improved significantly on ESET NOD32 2015.

A good security suite should fill some of the gaps left by OS-level security products, and ESET NOD32 delivers. It includes the important firewall, parental controls, and password manager features that are rare in inexpensive security suites. The only real downside is that it only runs on the Windows platform.

ESET also offers four standalone antivirus products. Two are for the Mac platform, which has little need for standalone Mac antivirus products. Avira AntiVir Internet Security Protection is better than ESETs antivirus, but it still does just one job.
