Commander General Patrick M.G. Gallagher is a member of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. General Gallagher was also responsible for the management and oversight of the Army’s recruiting, training, education and personnel programs. During his tenure, General Gallagher helped to oversee the Army’s adaptation of the New Soldier Basic Training System, which reduced the training time from 14 weeks to 10 weeks, and led the Army’s modernization, including its Force XXI battle command system. In addition, the system’s digital capabilities improved, making real time information available to Soldiers at the platoon level.

General Gallagher previously served as the commander of Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan (CFC-A) from March 2015 to March 2016. He was responsible for the command and control of all of the Army’s deployed forces in Afghanistan and the management of all United States ground forces supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. He replaced Army Vice Chief of Staff General Michael J. Flynn, who was the Supreme Allied Commander of ISAF.
